We read and check it
Every charge, payment and refund becomes a row, and the rows are checked against the previous and new balance on the statement.

What the Excel file looks like
An example conversion: one row per transaction with a signed amount. Charges are negative, payments and refunds positive, and rows that need a check stay marked.

CSVPlain rows for anything that imports
Every statement is checked before you download
Rows are only useful if they add up. The previous balance plus the charges, minus the payments and credits, should equal the new balance your card issuer prints.
Every run, automatically
Previous to new balance
The previous balance plus every charge, minus every payment and credit, is compared with the printed new balance. A gap is shown, never adjusted away.
Signed amounts
Each row has one amount: charges are negative and payments and refunds positive, so a column total is what you paid less what you spent.
Dates in order
A date that is out of order with the rows around it is flagged.
Complete rows
A row missing its date, description or amount is flagged rather than guessed.
